Greater Vernon residents should be ready to pay more for water this year. Local politicians are proposing a 24 percent increase in the residential base fee for water, and 20 percent increases in each of the five consumption tiers. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chair Juliette Cunningham says they have to raise 18.6 million dollars to run and upgrade the water system this year. "The reality is, it does cost a lot of money to operate the system and provide safe water. It still leaves us competitive with rates up and down the valley," says Cunningham. Cunningham says the upgrades will bring the system up to compliance with regulations imposed by Interior Health. "This isn't anything to do with the master water plan per se, it's to bring the system up to the standards, and make some repairs." Agriculture rates are proposed to go up 7 percent, which is higher than past years. "It's more than past years. I believe it was 5% and 3% percent the last two years," says RDNO's Engineering G-M Dale McTaggert. The rates bylaw will be before the GVAC committee for preliminary approval March 6.
DON QUIXOTE VS. CITY HALL When an American gets mad, he says "where's my Gun". When a Canadian gets pissed off he says "Where is my pen, I'm going to send a letter to the EDITOR". When the EDITOR won't publish his letter he sets up his own BLOG page. When I received enough support to get a Council Seat the dogma of the establishment became : "Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in." (Only time will tell !)
