20%+ Water Hikes Going Ahead

Written by Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM Thursday, 06 March 2014 17:15
Big hikes are on the way for Greater Vernon water customers, although one rate group will get a bit of a break. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee has approved base fee and consumption increases ranging from 20 to 24 percent, while agricultural will rise 7 percent. Director Bob Spiers led a motion to allow customers that use the least amount of water, from 0 to 10 mega litres a quarter, to not have their rate increased, as a sort of reward for conserving. Area C director Mike Macnabb disagreed with that reduction. "Everybody has an obligation to pay for it (the water system), so I don't think we should flip-flop and say 0 to 10 is now free. We're not sending the correct message to the public. We have to be consistent," Macnabb told the committee. Only final approval is needed before the hikes take effect this spring.

Don Quixote Note: The small change in the prelim rates was to leave the 0-10 m3 rate at 50 cents rather than the proposed 60 cents.. and to raise the 11-20 m3 from .90 to 1.05 (Instead of 1.10m3 -a 17% increase. ) In effect this will save each account holder that uses at least 20m3 a saving of about 1.50 per quarter/  $6.00 Annually.

A calculator with these new residential rates (That have to be approved by the RDNO board) can be found

Punch in your quarterly average consumption and the calculator will show you your increase.
