Sports Complex May Be Cut Back

A local politician says parts of the new sports complex next to Okanagan College may have to be scaled back due to rising costs. Bob Fleming, director for BX Swan Lake, says each component has so far come in under budget, but they may have to look at options for the building that will house the change rooms and other facilities. "The classroom is non negotiable. That's going to be there (as it was part of the deal with the college which is leasing the land to RDNO), but the scale of the change rooms and the rest of the scale of the facility has been designed in a modular fashion, so that as opposed to eight change rooms, maybe you get six," Fleming told the media at today's Greater Vernon Advisory Committee meeting. Fleming says the 7.5 million dollar track and field facility should be done by the end of December, which he says will still be able to meet the requirements of the agricultural land commission for using farm land. "All the outdoor components, the track, the fields, the natural field, all those things will be done. I don't think the ALR was concerned about the landscaping which may carry on until next season,"adds Fleming. The 7.5 million dollar complex includes playing fields, and an Olympic sized rubberized running track.
