City of Vernon takes on arena vote duties

The City of Vernon will be the lead agency during a referendum on a proposed second ice sheet. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee decided Thursday to contract the city to pursue all public information requirements for the November referendum to borrow up to $13 million for an expansion to Kal Tire Place. “I have faith in them doing it,” said Jim Garlick, Coldstream director, of the city. “This will spread the task over a larger group of employees instead of just at the regional district so the process can be done in a timely manner.” The other factor is that while all of Greater Vernon would pay for capital and operating costs, a new ice sheet would be owned by the city. GVAC will pay the City of Vernon $20,000 to handle public information during the referendum. “The city will basically manage the process,” said David Sewell, Regional District of North Okanagan chief administrative officer.
