Lumby's put off a bylaw that would have stiffened it's smoking regulations. Mayor Kevin Acton says they got a fair amount of feedback on a proposed ban. "There was quite a backlash from people who didn't smoke, worried we're putting too many rules in place and becoming too authoritarian," says Acton. Acton says a general comment was they would be putting in another rule that couldn't be enforced, noting they also recently brought in a ban on pesticides. He says it's not gone, but they will be taking another look at how to handle the issue. The village already bans smoking near the village pool and in parks with the exception of beer gardens. The mayor says they will continue with an education program aimed at youth, run by UBCO nursing students. "That's where we've re-focused our energies for now," says Acton.
