Private Hydrants Draw Scrutiny

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee will take a closer look at the fees charged to Greater Vernon residents who have private fire hydrants on their land. Barb Mitchell from the Highland Golf Course in Coldstream wonders why annual servicing fees are 133 dollars for public hydrants, but she has to pay much more. "Private hydrants are taxed at 560 dollars, up from 470 dollars last year, for no servicing," Mitchell told the committee. Mitchell says she doesn't mind paying a fee, but questions the fairness of the fee policy. GVAC director Jim Garlick says they will review the fees they charge and how they are inspected. "Right now it sounds like there's no inspection that takes place and yet that's what is required in order for the owner to go to their insurance company and get a lower premium." Garlick says Coldstream's fire department doesn't use the private hydrants for emergencies. There's estimated to be more than 100 of the hydrants on private land in the area.
