Balloon Bomb From WW II Found?

Written by Glen Morrison 107.5 KISSFM Friday, 10 October 2014 08:27
It appears a relic of World War II has been turned up east of Lumby. The RCMP's Gord Molendyk says Tolko crews working in the bush off the Thunder Mountain Forestry Road discovered an "object" with fins on it. "It's what they suspect is a Japanese balloon bomb. That's what they described it as. We are contacting our disposal units to come in and see whether they can render it safe so they can continue to work in that area," he says. Molendyk says it may take some time to be sure just what it is. The explosives experts from CFB Esquimalt are expected later today. "On May 5th 1945 an Oregon woman and five children were killed when they found one of the devices. Japan released between 9,000 and 10,000 of the balloons that floated across the Pacific on the jet stream and were intended to explode in North America to cause forest fires and panic. Each balloon was armed with a 15-kilogram antipersonnel bomb and four 4.5-kilogram incendiaries, as well as a flash bomb to destroy evidence of the devices."
