Vernon's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it may look into the feasibility of a licensing program for cats. SPCA branch manager Chelsea Taylor told city council, it's one of the ideas they have to help animals in the community. Mayor Akbal Mund says he's not sure if that would be good plan to pursue. "I'd have to look at it and talk to Chelsea about it to see if it's that big an issue, or ten years from now. is it going to be an issue that we really need to do? So I have to get more of the facts," Mund tells Kiss FM. The society could use part of the licensing fees for their programs, which is apparently done in Calgary. But Councillor Juliette Cunningham is concerned the licenses could be a hardship for some residents including seniors with cats. "Some of them are on fixed incomes and a lot of seniors have companion cats, so I would have to hear a good case for going ahead with that," says Cunningham. It costs about $435,000 a year to run the local SPCA facility, plus another $89,000 for investigations, which Taylor says comes from adoption fees, service fees and donations, as they get no government funding.
