Affordable housing project opens in downtown Vernon

by Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star posted Aug 28, 2015 at 7:00 AM
The opportunities for affordable housing are expanding in Vernon. The Journey Inn motel behind the Fruit Union Plaza has been purchased by the John Howard Society, with assistance from B.C. Housing. "It will be for people who are low-income and can live independently," said Annette Sharkey, with the Social Planning Council. Sharkey added that the cost of housing is extremely challenging for many individuals, including those who are employed. Singles and couples will be able to live in the units and they will be referred by various community agencies. There will be building supervision on site.  "The John Howard Society is a good neighbour and it acts to help improve the neighbourhood," said Sharkey.
