They had the option of moving, but they chose to stay. The home of the Vernon Farmer's Market could be a little unsettled if a Nov. 28 referendum to add a second ice sheet to Kal Tire Place is approved. The $13.5 million second ice sheet will go on the north end of the multiplex which has some people associated with the market concerned, so they were given the option to re-located. City Councillor Catherine Lord and Mayor Akbal Mund met with the market board of directors to hear their concerns and to try and find a solution. The market was given the option of moving to the parking lot near the performing arts centre, but Lord said that plan was not well received. “They persuaded us for them to move to the performing arts centre, the market has to shrink a bit,” said Lord Sunday. “They said if they have to shrink anyway, they would rather shrink on the site they are on rather than move.” Lord said it was made clear should the referendum pass, the market would be set up near a busy construction site and to be prepared for what that means. “We told them there are gong to be times of conflict because on a construction site you can never say for sure when something is going to be delivered,” she said. Council will look at the issue once again on Monday when staff makes a recommendation “council support the Vernon Farmers Market remaining on the Kal Tire Place parking site during construction of the twinning of Kal Tire Place should the Nov. 28 borrowing referendum be approved.” The report council will receive will also recommend the actual market site be constrained to a certain area.“I think there will be some discussion. Personally I think it will go through, but I can not speak to council,” said Lord.
