Broken water mains flood

Nicholas Johansen - Sep 3, 2016 / 12:28 pm CASTANET
Two broken water mains have flooded streets, disrupted traffic, backed up sewer and water lines and cancelled a hockey game in Vernon. One water main break, near 35A Street and 40 Avenue, has closed southbound traffic on 35A Street, and reduced northbound traffic to one lane. Fifty homes in the area have lost water service as well, but the City of Vernon expects service to be returned by 3 p.m. Saturday. The City says there is “significant flooding” from the break. Water has filled the sewer system and pump stations are over capacity. Water and sewer lines in the lower rooms of Kal Tire Place were backed up as well. While the lines have since been cleared, staff are currently cleaning and repairing the mess. Saturday's Vernon Viper game has been cancelled. The other break occurred near the 1800 block of 15 Street. Water service to 20 homes was disrupted, but the City expects service to be returned by 6 p.m.
