Deadline Extended For Arena Project

Vernon, BC, Canada / 1075 KISS FMx Pete McIntyre February 24, 2017 04:00 pm
Lots of companies are interested in building the new arena at Kal Tire Place. Vernon Recreation Services Director Doug Ross says tenders were supposed to close today, but they’ve decided to extend it to March 10. “There has been such great interest in the project that we got some requests to extend the deadline, so we felt that was certainly doable as far as our timeline goes,” Ross tells Kiss FM. The estimated budget to construct the 400 seat arena is 11.5 million dollars. “This gives people an opportunity to drill down a little bit more to make sure they’re putting in the best prices possible,” adds Ross The 400 seat second ice sheet will be built onto the north end of the current building. Work is expected to start this spring, with the $13 million project targeted to be finished by the fall of 2018.

Bids galore for new arena

There is no shortage of interest from companies wanting to build a new arena in Vernon. Tenders for the $13-million project that will add a second sheet of ice to the existing Kal Tire Place were supposed to close on Friday, but that deadline has been extended to March 10. Doug Ross, director recreation services for the City of Vernon, said there had been requests from contractors to extend the deadline so they could gather more information. “There has been a lot of interest in it,” said Ross, adding to date the city has received 18 tenders for the job. “This is very good. We're very happy to see 18. There is definitely some competition.” Ross said the bids will be opened on the afternoon of March 10. According to the city, “The addition will include a new NHL-size ice surface and seating for 400. The main floor will have a front lobby with administrative office, a concession, public washrooms, change room facilities and elevator. Service and storage rooms will also be located on the main floor level. The seating will be located on the second floor along with a Dryland Training Facility and additional leasable space and connection to adjoining facility.” Approximately $13 million has been set aside for the project which is expected to take 15 to 18 months to build, with a targeted opening date of Sept. 1, 2018. In 2015, sports clubs campaigned for a new arena, fearful of an imminent failure of the 78-year-old Civic Arena which is being nursed along by city staff.
