Big Money Taken Out of Local Politics

Vernon, BC, Canada / 1075 KISS FM Pete McIntyre October 30, 2017 04:28 pm

Donation limits will be in place for next year’s municipal elections in BC.The provincial government has introduced legislation to ban union, corporate, and out-of-province donations, and to limit individual donations to $1200 per donor per year. Municipal minister Selina Robinson says it will level the playing field for municipal candidates. “It’s been a wild west in local political fundraising here and people want change. Deep pockets shouldn’t decide elections, people should,” says Robinson. The changes will also apply to school board, regional district, and any other candidates seeking locally elected office. “The public was certainly complaining about it. We saw in Vancouver the were a $943,000 personal donation made to one party. You’d have to blind to not feel or see that was potentially skewering our politics,” adds Robinson, a former city councillor in Coquitlam.
