Vocal arts funding comes under scrutiny
The Greater Vernon Services Commission is trying to determine if it's over-paid the Vernon Vocal Arts Festival. The GVSC board recently agreed to give the society $10,000 but director Barry Beardsell claims that goes against policy because $32,000 was awarded in 2003. "This is serious," said Beardsell, adding that the current policy only allows for one-time grants for groups. Staff has instructed the board that the issue will be investigated further.
Process begins to review water rates
The Greater Vernon Services Commission is officially looking at water rates and how they're levied. On Thursday the board approved the scope of work for a review. "We're trying to determine what is the best fit for our customer base," said Jeremy Kinch, with the GVSC water utility. Director Cliff Kanester has suggested in past that capital infrastructure should be paid for through taxation and not user fees.
Work approved for new Sovereign Park
Infrastructure work will soon begin at Sovereign Park in Coldstream. The Greater Vernon Services Commission board has approved construction of parking lots, placement of power lines underground and provision of sewer. "The park plan is a product of public meetings and meeting with people living in the area adjacent to the park," said Al McNiven, parks and recreation administrator. GVSC has allocated $294,098 for phase-one development of the park in 2006.
