Greater Vernon residents are being asked whether Polson Park needs a grandstand. The Greater Vernon Services Commission will hold a public input meeting Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Centre. “We want to keep the meeting focused on the grandstand,” said Al McNiven, parks administrator.
“The purpose of the session is not to have a detailed discussion on the design of Polson Park.” The heritage grandstand in the park was destroyed by arsonists this summer. Since then, there has been considerable debate within the community, with some residents stating there is a need for permanent seating for the football field, track and special events within the park. However, the GVSC had previously considered removing the grandstand, field and track to another location in Vernon so passive activities could be pursued at Polson. McNiven says his office doesn’t have any preconceived notions about what should happen at the former grandstand site. “We’re staying open minded and a lot of people on the GVSC board weren’t there when we had serious discussions before.” McNiven admits that any talk about the grandstand does spill over into the future of the track and the football field. Insurance from the grandstand fire has generated $600,000 in replacement value, and the terms of how the money can be spent has been clarified. “It does not have to be replaced at that site,” said McNiven.
