Coldstream Referendum Passes

The Coldstream referendum has passed by a wide margin. Residents were asked if they supported borrowing up to four million dollars for new firehalls in Lavington and Coldstream 72 percent (727) said Yes, and 28 percent (282) said No. 1,009 people voted which was a turnout of 18 percent. Mayor Gary Corner says the issue will next go back to council to determine when the building can begin. He tells KISS FM , 'We'll do up some proper designs on both buildings and then it'll go out for tender early in the new year and then construction should start early in the spring.' Coldstream Fire Chief Leo Lecavalier says the new hall should be built in a year and a half, (at a site on Aberdeen Road) and will give them more room. 'Its good that we can move forward with the equipment we need to purchase and move on with fire protection for the community. I think peeople have to recognize it's a building for the community and we just operate it for them. We just needed to go there and it's about time.' The new projects will mean an extra $63 a year in taxes, over 25 years, for the average Coldstream homeowner.
