Decision Day For Coldstream

Voting day is tomorrow (November 17) for the Coldstream referendum.
Residents are being asked if they support borrowing up to $ 4 million for new firehalls in Lavington and Coldstream. The impact to the average homeowner would be an extra $63 in taxes per year, for 25 years. District officials have pointed out the vote is not whether the facilities should be built or not, but rather if the money should be borrowed. About 5,500 people are eligible to vote. The polls will be open at Coldstream elementary school and Lavington elementary, from 8 am to 8pm Saturday. The last time Coldstream held a referendum was 2001 when voters rejected a $1.5 million borrowing vote for a new municipal office by a margin of 51 percent. Turnout was just 25 percent. However, the council at the time led by Mayor Brian Postill still proceeded with a new lower cost hall, noting the referendum was only on the borrowing aspect of the project. There's been suggestions that could happen again this time with the new firehalls, if votors reject it.
