Region-wide support lost

The loss of support for O’Keefe Ranch is raising concerns that a regional focus on economic development is fading. Electoral areas B (BX Swan Lake) and D (rural Lumby) recently withdrew their support from a function that provides funding to the ranch. Coldstream Coun. Mary Malerby was troubled to see the areas remove themselves from something that benefits the entire region. “I’m kind of disturbed when I see sections coming out of it. If we all pull out of it, we’ll lose the O’Keefe Ranch because it can’t be maintained.” Malerby is concerned with what impact the decision to withdraw from the O’Keefe function would have on the recently formed regional economic development function. The North Okanagan Regional District formed the latter function with participation from all to benefit the region as a whole. “It was very important for all the members of NORD to maintain that regional focus,” said Malerby. All but one councillor, Doug Dirk, agreed not to send their consent to NORD in regards to the O’Keefe Ranch function withdrawals.
