A few years ago, when some people worried how the proliferation of gaming centres would effect problem gamblers, a spokesperson for the BC Lottery Corporation said it wasn’t the Corp’s job to track problem gamblers, but there were safeguards in place. Now there are questions about the integrity of lotteries, with charges that the people who sell the tickets win an astonishing number of times in the $10,000 and over categories. No one keeps track of the wins under $10,000. Apparently it isn’t BCLC’s job to track the integrity of the lottery system either. The Corp only investigates if a customer squawks and that doesn’t happen very often. Vancouver’s Georgia Straight newspaper reports that BCLC President and CEO Vic Poleschuk was paid $442,667.48 in the 2005/06 financial year, plus another $64,874.04 for expenses. BCLC chair John McLernon is quoted as saying the pay is “very, very” fair, given the size of the company which saw a profit of $1 billion last year. With that kind of money flying around, you’d think BCLC could spare a few dollars for monitoring the system to ensure everything is on the up and up.
