MY TOWN

With the pending holiday season we must be extra vigilant over how we go about our daily activities. Often I see items in vehicles parked at various locations throughout our community including major parking lots and streets. These items range from groceries to expensive electronics but they are easily observed through the vehicle’s windows. As a result our thefts from vehicle offences typically increase this time of the year. It is suggested that you place all items in the trunk of your vehicle or if you do not have a trunk under a blanket or on the floor of your vehicle.Avoid carrying large amounts of cash when you go shopping. It is also strongly suggested that you not carry a purse as they are very hard to defend against. Backpacks and fanny packs are both good alternatives. After all the festivities are over and you are recycling all the cardboard packaging be careful how you place these items in your recycling bags. Do not advertise to everyone all the things you received as gifts by having their packaging facing the outside of the transparent recycling bag. Line the bag with the Christmas wrap first then place the packaging inside. This will prevent passers-by from seeing everything you received as gifts and perhaps targeting your home when you are away. If out for the evening leave the lights on and the TV or radio. You should give the impression that someone is at home. Ensure your walkways and driveways are shoveled even if you are gone for an extended period of time. Be careful of those coming to your door canvassing for a charity. Most charitable organizations have their canvassers carry identification. Ask intelligent questions as to who they represent and who will be receiving the donations. If in doubt ask for written material regarding the charity or an envelope that you can send in should you decide to support this particular charity. Some canvassers use high pressure tactics in order to receive donations. You should be very cautious about these types of people and obtain as much information about who they represent as possible. Remember, your first line of defense is your locked door. Never open your door to anyone you do not recognize. You can have conversations through a locked door. If you have any particular concerns or questions you feel would make an interesting article please make contact with me, Terry Pakenham, at my fax line 260-5866, or my direct office line at 260-5276.
