Some local landowners will hold a peaceful protest at the B-C Assessment office in Vernon tomorrow. Lavington resident Kurt Yakalashek from the Land Owners Rights Group, questions why land owners are assessed taxes on property they don't really control. He says the Mineral Tenure Act allows mining companies to make claims on private land, which strips the land-owner of the surface rights.
Yakalashek says,'Only 5% of BC is privately held. There's a lot of crown land to explore and we can't see that it makes any sense to basically push people off there surface that they believed they owned in order to appease the mineral exploration industry.' Yakalashek says the Act needs to be updated to protect the massive investments residents have in their land.
Liquor Store Privatization Questioned
The Consumers' Association of Canada is calling on the B-C Solicitor General to explain how consumers are benefiting from privatization of liquor stores. Solicitor General John Les has granted an extra three-per-cent wholesale discount to private stores. But Bruce Cran of the consumers' group questions the need. He notes that consumers already pay 20 to 30 per cent more for products in private beer, wine and liquor outlets.
