North Okanagan residents are being asked to provide their thoughts on the future of transit service. During March and April, the public can provide feedback on how to improve transit service levels and reliability in Greater Vernon, Lumby, Armstrong and Enderby. “We want to seek the public’s input on what kind of improvements are needed,” said Myrna Moore, a planner with B.C. Transit. Moore admits that with substantial growth in the region, existing transit routes have not been able to keep up.
In Greater Vernon, among the possible issues is extending routes to Silver Star and to the University of B.C. campus in Kelowna. “We also need to look at more frequent coverage on existing routes,” said Moore, adding that another focus for residents may be Okanagan College’s Kalamalka campus. Residents may also suggest that they want to see more buses on the road at night and on the weekends. For Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby, there may be some interest in more connections to Vernon as well as commuter routes that allow people to get to work and home again.
There are three main ways in which residents can provide feedback. There will be an open house March 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Village Green Mall centre courtyard. They can also submit comments online at www.busonline.ca and type Vernon. Flyers will also be available on transit buses, and they can be returned to the driver, faxing it to 545-7876 or mailing it to Vernon Regional Transit service review, B.C. Transit, Box 610, Victoria, V8W 2P3. Once the surveys are done, officials will consider the information and determine a strategy, including financial implications. Moore is hopeful that as many North Okanagan residents as possible will participate in the survey process. “We want people to tell us what the most pressing need is,” she said.
