There won't be a destination casino in the town of Osoyoos anytime soon. Mayor John Slater says BC Lotteries has rejected the idea for at least two years. He says Lotteries isn't even considering tourism as part of the equation, and believe Osoyoos isn't big enough to generate the seven million dollars annually they want to bring in. He says they're also concerned about the impact a casino would have on the Lake City facility in Penticton. Slater rejects that theory, saying they see busloads of casino goers crossing the border to gamble in Washington State. Lotteries has told the town they won't even consider a facility at Desert Park because they feel horse racing is a dying industry in BC, and won't consider any other gaming facility in the town for at least two years. Slater says they're now looking for detailed parameters from Lotteries so they can get the process back on track. He calls the decision by Lotteries a slap in the face of all those in Osoyoos who have worked on the proposal.
