Blogreader's Comment of Week

Referring to the DON BUTLER – HERITAGE ALTERATION PERMIT APPLICATION FOR REM. LOT 2, PLAN 13634, SEC. 35, TP. 9, THO.D.Y.D. (2205 – 28 AVENUE) (P. 51) that was approved by a 5-0 vote on Monday:

"I bet you one cold beer that the Overend (sp?) property turns into an apartment complex....three or four apartments in the house and one over the new three-car garage. A council vote of 4-0 supporting the changes to that property is a bad joke. Cunningham's comments were particularly sad. I'm sure she'd be in favour of turning Luc Girouard cabin into low-cost housing."

In the North Okanagan, settlement was equally slow. In 1861 Luc Girouard constructed a cabin on the site of present-day Vernon but spent his first few years in the area mining on Cherry Creek and did not register a pre-emption until 1867. Charles Houghton and the Vernon brothers, Forbes George and Charles, registered pre-emptions in October 30th, 1863 through Military Grants. In the same year, Francis Jones Barnard arrived in the area looking for suitable land to raise horses for his Barnard's Express. He took up land on the bench to the east of Swan Lake but does not seem to have registered his pre-emption until 1873 when he recorded the then maximum allowable 320 acres.

I thought the paper said the vote was 4-0 The mayor not voting again?

I was there and thought the Mayor voted with the other 4. Even if he didn't put up his hand his vote is recorded in the affirmative under the rules of the Community Charter.

Of course the local newspaper could be right this time but what are the odds on that happening?
