The decision has already been made, but the public will have to wait another two weeks to find out more about the city's latest proposal for a halfway house. Corrections Canada had originally planned to announce the successful bid for the facility this Monday but that's now been pushed back to May 28. Lisa Bayne from the agency says the announcement will be made just prior to the city council meeting that day. She says the extra two weeks is to make sure all their affiliates at national headquarters are aware of the decision, before making it public. The Salvation Army and the Okanagan Halfway House Society are the two groups that bid on the 14 bed facility.
Bayne says the public input part of the process could begin in June. Vernon's former halfway house closed in 2004 after the murder of senior Bill Abramenko. A former resident of the facility, on parole for a previous murder, is accused in the killing.
