Canada’s top cop will be on hand in Vernon Sunday to pay tribute to a pair of fallen officers. Commissioner Bev Busson will be among the dignitaries present as a permanent memorial to Cst. Jean Minguy and auxiliary officer Glen Evely is unveiled in a public ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at the Vernon RCMP detachment. “Busson and Jean used to work together in North Vancouver,” said Vernon RCMP Cpl. Henry Proce. “We are very pleased that she’s taking the time to attend the ceremony.” A host of other dignitaries, plus a number of mounties in their traditional red serge, will also take part. The unveiling of the monument will come on the second anniversary of Minguy’s drowning death on Okanagan Lake.
Evely was killed on duty when the police cruiser he was riding in was t-boned at a downtown intersection by a driver in a stolen pick-up in November 2004. “It will be nice to have a permanent memorial for the family and friends of these two fallen members,” said Proce. The City of Vernon contributed $5,000 towards the memorial, while the RCMP Veterans Association’s Okanagan division contributed $1,400. Two unidentified outside sources also contributed financially towards the memorial. Members of the Vernon RCMP extend special thanks to the City of Vernon, Valley Monuments, Arden Tile, the RCMP Veterans Association and the Safe Communities Unit for their contributions in making this memorial possible.
