Indications are growing that a new jail will be built near Kelowna. Solicitor General John Les says the facility could be located on government-owned property atthe north end of the city, near Lake Country. Kelowna Mayor Sharon Shepherd says the jail and remand centre would be a real job-generator,during construction and afterwards. 'Also enhance the economics in the sense of providing jobs for people in the community and I wouldassum well-paying jobs.' However, Shepherd says nearby residents would have to get assurances they'd be safe and secure. Solicitor General John Les says the facility would cost 80 million dollars, and would ease theover-crowding in BC jails.
