Toronto - In a 23-22 vote, councillors have decided to postpone the vote on two controversial taxes until after October's provincial election. They spent the day debating new land-transfer and vehicle-ownership taxes that would have brought in $300 million in revenue for the city. The vote, if held, was expected to be close, with opposition coming from city councillors and taxpayers. Some councillors hope that by delaying the vote until after the provincial election, they might be faced with a new administration more sympathetic to Toronto's fiscal problems. They're hoping a new provincial government will be willing to reverse at least some of the downloading that has added millions to Toronto's budget.
