The federal government has come forward with some cash for a $20 million expansion of the Kamloops Airport. Kelowna is still waiting for expected similar federal funding for a planned runway extension. The feds have ponied up $6.6 million towards the Kamloops project, which includes an expanded terminal and extended runway. The rest of the money comes from the province and the Airport Improvement fee. Christopher Nicolson, President of Tourism Sun Peaks, will have tremendous benefits to the Kamloops ski hill. "The longer runway opens new opportunities for charter flights, larger equipment and new scheduled routes, " says Nicolson. Meantime, Kelowna continues to wait for $1.35 million in federal dollars for an expansion to the runway at the Kelowna International Airport. The province has already kicked in $1.35 million, with the city adding another $5.3 million. The Kelowna project, which will extend the runway from 7,300 to 8,900 feet, is scheduled to be complete by late 2008. The extension will allow direct flights from Europe to Kelowna. In March of this year, Kelowna-Lake Country MP Ron Cannan said he had hoped to have an answer from the government within a month.
