300% Raise for NORD Directors
Some NORD members will be getting a big pay hike. Regional directors have voted 10 to 3 in favour of a new bylaw that will see the annual pay of the eight municipal directors go from 15-hundred dollars---to 62-hundred. The raise brings the directors to the same level as the electoral area reps. Chairman Jerry Oglow says the move will cost an extra 38-thousand dollars a year but will create fairness and equity at the NORD table. Vernon directors Patrick Nicol and Juliette Cunningham were among the three who were opposed, both feeling the increase was too high and should be phased in.

New Daycare Spaces on Horizon
The North Okanagan Regional District has given its full support for a new daycare centre in rural Vernon. Fiona Forshaw is planning a 100 space facility in two converted houses owed by local businessman Gujit Jhajj on Old Kamloops Road. The proposal now just needs approval from the Agricultural Land Commission to proceed. Forshaw won the board over, with plans to incorporate farming into the program. 'Well we are going to have a fairly large garden which we are hoping to use the food in that program for lunches and snacks. Just letting children plant the seeds and teaching them about where food comes from and letting them experience it on a daily basis.' There is a long waiting list for daycare in the area. Forshaw says the facility could open by November if it's approved by the A-L-C which she thinks will happen. 'I think they'll be very receptive to it. We're being very respectful of the farm land. We're not doing anything to hurt the farm land. The regional board is very supportive and I think that will mean a lot to them.' NORD directors went against a staff recommendation not to support the plan over concerns about the location and the impact on traffic.
