Angry IPE

Starlee Speers, Standard Radio News http://www.thesunonline.ca/news/565/582324

Organizers of the Armstrong IPE are not happy with a company that rented space on the fairgrounds for the five day event. IPE GM Mark Dibblee says, the marketing company 'International Promotions' has been contacting people who filled out a ticket for a free vacation. "We put it in our contract with them that none of the people from the fair were to be contacted without their consent" Dibblee says, the ticket stub says in fine print at the bottom to phone a toll free number to request not to be contacted. He adds, this company's tactics aren't consistent with the values of the IPE and they won't be allowed back again.

Entering a draw for a free vacation at the IPE has turned out to be ploy by a Toronto Marketing company. Fair manager Mark Dibblee says his agreement with International Promotions was that they not contact entrants without their permission. But the fine print at the bottom of the form says the person must call a 1-800 number in order to NOT be contacted. Those that filled out the ballot are being called - told they've won the vacation, at a reduced price, and then asked for credit card information. Dibblee says while International Promotions is a legitimate company they sell time shares and their tactics are not consistant with the values of the fair, and such enterprises will not be allowed space at future fairs.
Anyone contacted by the company with questions can call Stacey at 1 866 423 8180 to express their concerns.

Lumby resident Norm Hannam lost $700 in a similiar contest he entered last year at the IPE. He says the company uses high pressure tactics."They're fast talkers. They got my wife on the phone and she told me to pick the other phone up, and I tell you, they are fast talkers. They just painted such a beautiful picture and once they got your card number, that's it. You're had." Hannam says in order to get the free trip you have to pay air fare to Florida, and sit in on a time share meeting. He advises people to never give out their credit card info and just hang up the phone.Anyone contacted by the company with questions can call Stacey at 1 866 423 8180 to express their concerns.

SCAM or quite close to legal line?
Don Quixote Note: This company using a telephone number 212-994-2308 has been using the entries for this contest to contact people who entered to inform them that they won a vacation trip etc. They try to get your credit card info and to make an upfront payment of $299 to cover expenses. If you Google the above telephone # you can see the extend of the 'Marketing scheme' http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-212-994-2308
Appears to be part of a timeshare company etc.

The questions on entry form apparently were Name address and phone #, over 21? marital status and type of credit card. (visa, mastercard etc.)

By simply filling out a ballot to win a vacation at a home, boat or auto show, you may be set up for "suckers lists". Shortly after filling out this ballot, you may be contacted over the phone by someone claiming to offer you a "free" or "low cost" vacation. They will ask for your credit card number and personal information in order to hold the vacation for you, or they may request money in advance.

Don't give out your credit card information over the phone. If you want to check out the value of these promises, seek out the advice of a legitimate travel agency in your area. If you have provided credit card information to the telemarketers, be aware that most companies have policies that allow you to cancel your reservation within 30 days. Do not let anyone pressure you into committing to any agreement over the phone.
