Vancouver's civic workers' strike could extend into 2008, mediator Brian Foley warned Sunday after two of the three striking union locals recommended rejection of his proposals. Outside workers and library workers have been urged to turn down the proposal, while negotiators for inside workers have recommended acceptance."My conclusion would be that if they decide to stay out on strike, it will be a long, long strike," Foley said Sunday in response to the unions' positions. "I think if they don't go back to work, you'll be talking about this in the new year."
The three Canadian Union of Public Employees locals, which together have some 5,000 members, have been on strike since late July.Outside workers and library workers will vote on the offer Tuesday, while inside workers will vote both today and Tuesday. The strike, now entering its 81st day, has meant residential garbage pickup has ground to a halt. Swimming pools, theatres, marinas, and libraries, and city-run day camps have been closed. Permits are being issued at a snail's pace, with managers doing unionized jobs.
