Highlights from Okanagan Regional Library Board Meeting

A Public Service Announcement from the Okanagan Regional Library

At the November 21, 2007 Meeting of the Okanagan Regional Library Board, the Board:
• Received a presentation on the design and costing of a new library which will be part of a civic building to be built in Vernon, directly behind the current library branch facility. The building will include the library, art gallery space, and municipal office space. A final decision on funding the civic complex will be made through a referendum to be held January 26, 2008. The Board extended their interim partnership agreement with the city of Vernon, and indicated that they still wish to have equity in the new building, rather than leasing the space. The Board
expressed strong and continuing support for the new civic building.
• Approved 2008 budget expenditures in the amount of $13,323,562. Budget initiatives include hiring a “Virtual Branch Manager” who will be tasked to improve the library system’s web site, adding wireless services to six more branches, increasing self checkout stations, paying for additional educational requirements in some Community Librarian Job Descriptions, additional staff hours for the Computer Services Department, and the purchase of performance appraisal software. Additional funding for Summer Reading Club and Toddler programs was also included.
• The Board said goodbye to retiring Board members who had been on the Board for a full 8 year term. They are: Jean Fraser (Peachland), Ron Oszust (Golden and Electoral Area A of the CSRD), John Slater (Osoyoos), Carol Williams (Coldstream), Lynn Miller (Sicamous), and Colin Day (Kelowna).
