An error in reporting results from one polling station has resulted in a dramatic change in the results of last Saturday's Westside Municipal Election. As a result of the mistake, David Knowles secures one of the six council seats, bumping Mary Mandarino off of council. The error was brought to the attention of Chief Election Officer, Lyla Lindsay, by Knowles, who felt his numbers for the George Pringle polling station were abnormally low. "Saturday evening during the phone reporting from the polling station, an error was made regarding the results communicated for candidate David Knowles," says Lindsay. "On review of the print-out from the voting machine, we found candidate Knowles should have had 1,115 votes rather than the 115 votes originally reported in the unofficial election results." Lindsay says a review of voting documentation from all the polling locations found no other anomalies in the reporting of the results. She says the updated figures mean Doug Findlater, Duane Ophus, Knowles, Carol Zanon, Gord Milsom and Heather Pilling are all councillors-elect. "Again, I wish to apologize for this error in the reporting of the unofficial results and reiterate that after a meticulous review of the poll documents we have not found any other issues regarding the reported results." The Official Declaration of Results will be made by 4 p.m. Wednesday.
