Initiatives to make housing more attainable and affordable in Vernon dominated city council Monday. Councillor Juliette Cunningham says, the city is 100-percent behind the recommendations in the attainable housing strategy. Cunningham says the city will review development cost charges so there's an incentive to build multi-family housing. Amendments to the secondary suites bylaw will make it easier and less expensive to make one legal.
As well, the city of Vernon has donated an acre of land to the community land trust for non-profit housing. Affordable housing for women leaving the Vernon transition house will be developed on the property on Pleasant Valley road. Land trust society president Randy Kolibaba says, a land trust acquires and holds land donations to be used for affordable housing projects. The proposed development would create affordable housing for women and their families who are trying to escape violence. Debby Hamilton with the Transition house says, 14 affordable housing units will be built on the Pleasant Valley road property. Hamilton says the expected cost of the development will be around two and a half million dollars. Annette Sharkey, with the Social Planning Council, says this partnership is the first of many in efforts to create affordable housing in Vernon. The Transition house will lease the land from the Land Trust.
