The Vernon Taxpayers Association didn't get the answers it was seeking during a visit to Vernon council. Group spokesman Tony Stamboulieh made a presentation which included several questions and concerns about the upcoming referendum. He accused the city of trying to ram the vote through, and telling residents how to vote.Stamboulieh told the media, he doesn't expect a response from the city."That's the style of this council they are utterly disconnected with their community."Stamboulieh summed up his presentation by saying a bigger library and art gallery would be desirable, but are not needed, and other projects are more important.

This referendum is a travesty. The City of Vernon is unethically telling voters how to vote in a mockery of democracy. Maybe this is how they do things in South Africa, but not in Canada. Is the City next going to tell us who to vote for in the next general election? Costs for the referendum are included in the borrowing. These costs will undoubtedly include the cost of the ads telling us to vote yes. Rather than doing what they should and campaigning for a vote either way in their own names the politicians are hiding behind the City and burdening all taxpayers. For this disturbing lack of ethics they should all resign.
The actions by Administration and Mayor and Council have been inexcusable. The information has been incomplete, the costs of presenting this misleading information must be mamoth, and they have even pushed the RCMP inspector into helping in their relentless pursuit of insulting the taxpayers intelligence.
