Reviewing fire service

February 01, 2008 Salmon Arm Observer

When there’s a fire, people call the fire department and fire trucks come. But it’s not that simple behind the scenes. The Columbia Shuswap Regional District is paying $46,000 for a fire services review. In a memo to directors, manager of works services Doug Dymond said there are three reasons for the review: first of all, to address some of the existing inequalities in service delivery and tax rates; secondly, to streamline operations and governance; and thirdly to examine future opportunities. Dave Mitchell and Associates Ltd. of Coquitlam, B.C., who was awarded the contract, will review 13 rural volunteer fire departments and various fire service agreements. Some of the key components include a review of existing facilities and apparatus, existing bylaws, service areas and levels of service. North Shuswap Director Denis Delisle said if the fire departments could be given a “heads up” before people come with questions, they will be better prepared. Sicamous/Malakwa Director Rhona Martin agreed, saying if the fire departments have the questions ahead of time they can give more accurate answers.Delisle asked if a possible fire station for Seymour Arm could be included in the review.Dymond said the review is for existing fire stations, but the issue is something the regional district could consider.
