Possible sighting of murder suspect at B.C. store (LUMBY)

Updated Sun. Apr. 13 2008 11:07 AM ET CTV.ca News Staff

Two employees of a Lumby, B.C. store say they are convinced a man who returned some empties on Wednesday was Allan Dwayne Schoenborn. The women say the man, in his forties, returned some beer bottles or cans and bought rolling papers at the small store. After he left, they noticed the outdoor ashtray -- normally overflowing with cigarette butts -- had been emptied. "They both thought he was a little bit different and he was speaking differently -- like a speech impediment or something," said store owner Dennis Dandenault. "The credibility of these two people that work for us is very good and they told me they believe it was him," he added. The mother of Kaitlynne Schoenborn, 10, Max Schoenborn, 8, and Cordon Schoenborn, 5, found them dead in their Merritt, B.C. mobile home on April 6.

Police are searching for Allan Schoenborn, 40, who is the prime suspect in the killings. The women said they called the RCMP's tip line immediately after the sighting but got no response. They said they called their local police the next day and, once again, no officers came to the store. Dandenault said he's worried about the lack of response. "We're slightly concerned," he told CTV British Columbia. "If, in fact, it is a good lead, if this person was travelling through our community, it would be a starting point." The women said they recognized Schoenborn thanks to recently released police photos that reveal his small stature, standing at about five foot four.Lumby, at the north end of B.C.'s Okanagan Valley, is about 200 kilometres west of Merritt.
