Water board issues grants

April 06, 2008 Morning Star

North Okanagan communities are tapping into thousands of dollars for water-related projects.
The Okanagan Basin Water Board has issued grants to seven conservation and quality improvement projects. “These projects will create measurable conservation results valley wide,” said Genevieve Dunbar, water stewardship co-ordinator. The Greater Vernon Services Committee will receive $20,000 for cattle impact reduction measures, while the North Okanagan Regional District will get $20,000 for sensitive habitat inventory mapping along rural Vernon creeks. A total of $11,910 will go to the City of Vernon for its low-flow toilet rebate program, while $15,000 will go towards groundwater protection measures in the Larkin Waterworks District in Spallumcheen. The Okanagan Collaborative Conservation Program has received $29,500 for foreshore inventory mapping, while the District of Lake Country is getting $30,000 for a biology study on Okanagan Lake. There will also be $24,000 for a study of groundwater flow in the Middle Vernon Creek watershed. The project will be done by the Oceola Fish and Game Club.

Don Quixote NOTE:
Listed below are the 2007 grants. NORD Communities received 19% of the $300,000 available. I will publish the 2008 list when posted at OBWB. If the list above in BOLD is accurate then the NORD Communities will have received 13.3% of the $500,000 available. (Total $66,910). If the foreshore mapping for $29,500 is a NORD related grant then our percentage of the $500,000 would remain around 19%.

An article on the South Okanagan posted below indicates their funding went up from $66,300 to $110,000. Percentage seems to remain around 22%. This seems to indicate that CORD will receive the balance of 59% in 2008 as they did in 2007 . This is collaborated by an article posted below where they got $295,000 or 59% of the money available.

Water Conservation and Quality Improvement Grants - 2007
The intent of this grant program is to assist local governments in addressing issues that enhance valley-wide sustainable use of water. Projects were selected for recommendation based on a range of factors – including how well the project matched the goals of the program, the availability of funding, and whether the project supports other regional initiatives such as the Okanagan Basin Water Supply and Demand Study and OBWB policy recommendations. The total of all eligible proposals was $605,566, out of an original $300,000 allocation.

Several projects that protect and preserve water in the valley received funding from the Okanagan Basin Water Board this week. Eight projects in the South Okanagan received a total of $110,000 in funding under the OBWB’s Water Conservation and Quality Improvement grant program, which awarded a total of $500,000 in grants to 27 municipalities and community groups this year. The projects that received funding either focused on ways of improving water quality or looked at conservation methods.
