GVSC days could be numbered

It could mean an end of the Greater Vernon Services Committee. The directors for Areas B and C (BX, Swan Lake, Silver Star) have served notice to withdraw from the Greater Vernon Governance Service, effective in a year. Stan Field and Cliff Kanester say the agency no longer has the "checks and balances" that once made it effective. The pair of veteran local polticians say the services provided by GVS could be effectively operated and administered by another agency, and the governance service could therefore "be considered redundant." G-V-S chairman Gary Corner says the service could still continue with just Vernon and Coldstream."I'm not so sure it spells the end of it. There's still two major partners left in it which is Vernon and Coldstream and I think it's important all the partners sit down and discuss how to go about this in the most sensible way."The city of Vernon announced earlier this year it plans to withdraw from the Greater Vernon Water Service. The GVSC was formed in 2001 to deal with services that were previously controlled by the regional district, including water, parks and recreation and overseeing facilities like the Multiplex and Performing Arts Centre.
