A question of community policing

Lumby Village council’s position on community policing is that they don’t really have one until they get more information about it. In particular, how much would it cost? That clarification came at Monday’s regular council meeting in response to a request from White Valley Community Resource Centre, delivered by Coun. Elinor Turrill for council to “reconsider their position” on the program. Most councilors expressed support for the program and council has set aside funds for participation in it in the 2006 and 2007 budgets. That allocation was removed from the budget in 2008, mayor Eric Foster said, because there has been no further action on implementing the program here. He said council enquired about the cost of the program at a recent presentation by community policing representatives in Lumby. “Nobody seemed to know.” Council directed staff to contact WCRC about the program as well as to get in touch with the community policing program, the regional district and the City of Vernon to get information about costs.
