Virgin ruling rocks French legal system

CBC NEWS June 5
There's growing controversy in France over a court decision annulling the marriage of a Muslim couple because the bride had falsely told her husband-to-be that she was a virgin. The French government announced an appeal of the annulment decision Tuesday as calls grew for the resignation of the country's first senior cabinet minister of North African Muslim origin. Justice Minister Rachida Dati, who is responsible for the legal system, initially said she would not appeal the ruling by a court near Lille in northern France, but she changed her mind after weeks of unrelenting public, media and political uproar. One of Dati's junior cabinet colleagues, Urban Affairs Minister Fadela Amara, described the court decision as "a real fatwa against the emancipation and rights of women." Amara is also of a North African Muslim background. The French Prime Minister, Francois Fillion, said the appeal had to be lodged so virginity didn't become a legal precondition for marriage in France.
