Bail granted to Vancouver Island councillor charged with murder

CBC July 3

A Vancouver Island municipal councillor charged with second-degree murder and assault with a weapon was granted bail under several conditions on Thursday. Ken Brotherston, 52, is to be released after a $100,000 surety is posted. Brotherston, a councillor in the District of Highlands, just outside Victoria on southern Vancouver Island, must abstain from alcohol but is not under any curfew.

Outside the B.C. Supreme Court in Victoria on Thursday, Brotherston's lawyer, Robert Mulligan, said his client hasn't decided what to do about his status as a councillor. "He will meet with his fellow council members, obtain their views on the matter, obtain legal advice and do the right thing," Mulligan said.
