Following Ignace, Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes described the recent apology by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to students of native residential schools as a great moment for Canadians, and he asked that First Nations people find it in their hearts to forgive.
“That is the only way that we’re going to move forward together, is by recognizing each other and respecting each other and building our relationship up,” said Mayes, assuring the federal government cares for Canada’s aboriginal people.
“Government is not bad. We are trying,” said Mayes. “And it is very difficult when you deal with INAC (Indian and Northern Affairs Canada), a heartless department. But believe me, there are politicians who are representing you in Ottawa, and we do have a heart for aboriginal people.”
