PROVINCE INVESTS OVER $700,000 IN GOLDEN INFRASTRUCTURE
GOLDEN – The Town of Golden will become home to a B.C. Spirit Square and will see new bike lanes, sidewalks and pathways constructed on nearby streets, as a result of more than $700,000 in provincial funding announced by Community Development Minister Blair Lekstrom. “The Province is serious about helping communities realize their visions of more walkable and livable neighbourhoods,” said Lekstrom. “Both the B.C. Spirit Squares program and LocalMotion provide the means for people to be better connected in their communities with enhanced infrastructure and revitalized public spaces. The projects we are funding here in Golden will better help link the community and provide a focal point for local events.” The $335,000 in B.C. Spirit Square funding will create a community hub, including a multi-purpose event plaza with a performance area, a skating rink/water feature, tourist information kiosks, washrooms, landscaping and decorative pavers. Golden has chosen a mosaic theme for the community and the Spirit Square will house the largest mosaic as a centrepiece. The Province is also providing $381,573 in LocalMotion funding to build separated pathways, sidewalks or shoulder bike lanes along various sections of 11th Avenue South, 7th Street North and 12th Street North, in Golden.

Don Quixote Note: The second quarter Grant Review has not yet been released to the Public so we can see if the City of Vernon is applying for any of this grant money. It might be an idea to utilize the insurance money from the Polson Park grandstand fire in conjunction with any grants that could be obtained from these two programs to revitalize the Park as a focal meeting spot for the Public.
