Regina, Sask. – Aug. 28, 2008 – Members of the public are invited to attend the RCMP National Memorial Service that will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the RCMP Academy, "Depot" Division.
The Service is a tribute to members, special constables and auxiliary constables who have lost their lives in response to an operational policing duty in which there was the element of life-threatening risk.
This year, two names have been inscribed on the Cenotaph, Honour Roll and Memorial Wall Plaques. Constable Christopher John Worden died as a result of a gunshot wound sustained while responding to a call for assistance involving a suicidal male on October 6, 2007 at Hay River, Northwest Territories. Constable Douglas Allen Scott lost his life as a result of a gunshot wound received while responding to a call for assistance involving an impaired driver on November 5, 2007 at Kimmirut, Nunavut.
This brings the total number of fallen members to 220 since the creation of the North-West Mounted Police in 1873.
The Memorial Service begins at 9 a.m. with a parade and service at the Cenotaph, an enduring tradition that started in the mid-1930s, when RCMP members came to Sleigh Square to honour their fallen comrades. It will be followed by a Chapel service and a ceremony at the Memorial Wall.
"Depot" Division will host members from the Northwest Territories ("G" Division), Nunavut ("V" Division), Alberta ("K" Division ), Saskatchewan ("F" Division), Manitoba, ("D" Division), the North West Region, as well as cadets and veterans. .
