Vernon is the ninth busiest RCMP detachment in BC for cities with population over 15 thousand people. Vernon RCMP Inspector Steve McVarnock says while thefts, mischief and B and E incidents were down in 2007 over the ten year period, there were increases in other areas. The number of violent crimes in Vernon increased in 2007 . He attributes the decrease to more police undercover operations which disrupt those criminal activities for a 6 to eight week period. Incidences of violent crimes increased in Vernon in 2007 as did motor vehicle thefts.McVarnock believes drug addiction is what makes Vernon the busiest detachment in the Okanagan.

I love and admire the job our Police Officers do and I wouldn't want their job for anything. But, as a senior citizen in Vernon, Im very concerned that one minute we are told that crime is going down and the next we're told how busy our police officers are and how drugs is so bad and causing crime to rise.
Who's telling us the truth? Are the managers of the police detachment telling fibs to get more police officers or is the media just trying to sell more papers?
As a person who is 78 years old..this misinformation really concerns me. Am I the only one who notices things like this?
Please be honest because right now, Im so scared to walk the streets downtown alone.
