Group continues to shine

Vernon Morning Star:

The RCMP’s “extra sets of eyes and ears” came through again on the weekend. The volunteer group Citizens On Patrol, an arm of the City of Vernon RCMP Safe Communities Unit, helped find a stolen vehicle and located a potential vandalism suspect. Two members of Citizens On Patrol located a stolen vehicle in the 3400 block of 24th Avenue shortly after midnight on Saturday. Later on that morning, at 2:45 a.m., volunteer members heard a description of a suspect believed to be responsible for breaking windows at the Fruit Union Plaza.

Two Citizens On Patrol members located a subject matching the description with another individual in the alley behind Sir Winston’s Pub. Police were called, and the two individuals were taken into custody. Citizens On Patrol members are given cell phones for their volunteer shift, they monitor police radios, and they are each given Palm Pilots. Plate numbers of vehicles stolen in B.C. are downloaded onto the Palm Pilots, and the volunteers can then check plates to determine if a vehicle has been stolen.
