Inaugural Meeting

Starlee Speers 105.7 SUN FM

Vernon's Mayor and six councillors were sworn in Monday night in front of a standing room only crowd. In his address Mayor Wayne Lippert said open communication and honesty aren't options for city hall, they're requirements. Lippert says council's biggest challenge will be helping the city weather the global economic downturn. Lippert says his goal in his second term is to restore the sense of community pride in Vernon. This will be Lippert's second term as Mayor.

New councillor Bob Spiers says he's happy with the six committees he's been assigned to, among them the audit and finance committees as well as the tax exemption working group. New councillor Mary Jo O'Keefe tells us she doesn't believe the steep learning curve will be the biggest challenge for her, but trying to please everyone in the community, which she says is impossible. O'Keefe was assigned to six committees including the Advisory Planning board , the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee and the Downtown Vernon ASsociation.

Shawn Lee tells us he's uncertain as to what his biggest challenge will be as a first term councillor, but is certain he will work well with the others on council. Lee was appointed to five committees including the Regional Library board, the Affordable Housing Committee and the Land Advisory Committee. The mayor, and councillors Jack Gilroy and Patrick Nicol will serve on the regional district board.
