The seven members that will serve on Vernon council the next three years were sworn in Monday night at City Hall. The list includes incumbents Patrick Nicol, Buffy Baumbrough, Jack Gilroy and Mayor Wayne Lippert along with newcomers Bob Spiers, Mary Jo O'Keefe and Shawn Lee. Lippert has also announced his appointments to the 35 committees that range from the advisory planning board to the Vernon Winter Carnival liaison. The second term mayor says he put a lot of thought into the appointments. "It's always tough going through because you want to use people's knowledge and their experience and what they're really interested in."
The most high profile posts are on NORD where Lippert has appointed himself, Patrick Nicol and Jack Gilroy to be the city reps. Lippert, Baumbrough and O'Keefe will serve on the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee. The mayor, Nicol and Spiers will make-up the finance committee. Lippert says Spiers has been a keen observer of city finances for many years. "What I like about Bob is when he comes forward with an idea or something different, he just doesn't say no. He comes forward and asks questions and tries to have a solution." Lee's key appointments are to the new economic development-tourism committee, affordable housing and the Okanagan Regional Library.
